Maurice L. Shenefield, 79, of Akron, and formerly of Andrews, passed away at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Born July 15, 1936, in Huntington, he was the son of Richard and Loretta Peterson Shenefield. On Jan. 26, 1963, in Huntington, he married Ruth Searles, who survives in Akron.

Maurice served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a crane operator at General Motors Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1995. He attended Safe Harbor Church in Rochester, was a member of Rochester American Legion and was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan.

Besides his beloved wife of 53 years, survivors include his daughter, Penny Small of Claypool; a son, Dennis Lee (Amanda) Shenefield of Virginia; two brothers, Richard “Ed” (Serena) Shenefield and Samuel (Carol) Shenefield, both of Huntington; two sisters, Madge Rogers of Seymour and Nancy Coverstone of Huntington; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Larry, Charlie, Carl, Ray and Mark Shenefield; and a sister, Barbara Shenefield.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Mount Etna Cemetery. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689 will provide graveside military honors.

Preferred memorials are to a charity of the donor’s choice in care of Deal-Rice Funeral Home, 338 E. Washington St., Huntington, IN 46750.
