Disaster exercise set at Muscatatuck facility

While snow is not in the forecast, don’t be surprised if you see a number of yellow snowplow trucks on U.S. 50 next week.

Starting Monday, the Indiana Department of Transportation will stage disaster-response exercises at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center east of North Vernon. INDOT personnel from the Greenfield and Crawfordsville districts will train for earthquake and tornado emergencies.

The New Madrid Fault Line is the most active seismic area in the United States, according to a news release from INDOT. The nearby Wabash Valley Seismic Zone also is a real concern.

For purposes of these exercises, the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center will represent Vincennes, and the INDOT North Vernon Unit will simulate a unit facility near Vincennes. Seymour District offices are being used as a command center.

State police, firefighters and emergency medical services personnel also will be involved in the exercises.
