Tribune staff reports

Gamma Phi chapter of Tri Kappa sorority will be providing “hugs” throughout the community this week in celebration of Tri Kappa Week.

Chapter members will be distributing gift baskets of chocolate hugs to local schools and businesses to thank them for promoting culture, education and charity in the Seymour area.

Tri Kappa is a statewide sorority with the objective to bring women into close, unselfish relationship for the promotion of charity, culture and education. There are 145 chapters of Tri Kappa in Indiana.

The Seymour chapter of Gamma Phi was installed September 17, 1927, with 11 charter members. Today, Gamma Phi has 52 active chapter members and 48 associate chapter members.

The members of Gamma Phi meet once a month for a business meeting, which often includes a guest speaker or a “just for fun” fellowship activity.

Members participate in several fundraisers to support local and state organizations and to provide scholarships for local students.

Gamma Phi members put their baking and cake decorating skills to work in October supplying cakes for the Tri Kappa Cakewalk booth at the Oktoberfest. Members also conduct an annual Tri Kappa Nut Sale in the fall as one of the chapter’s major fundraisers.

Gamma Phi chapter created the “Twice is Nice” consignment sale in 2010 as a spring project, and it has been steadily growing in size every year. The sale features items such as children’s clothing, equipment, toys and room décor. In 2014, the sale had 105 consigners and grossed more than $20,000 in sales.

Gamma Phi is able to support additional philanthropic organizations in the community with the money raised during this sale. In 2014, Gamma Phi was able to give donations to the Seymour library summer reading program and the Pregnancy Care Center with the additional funds from the consignment sale.

Members also view this sale as a way to help provide area families with an affordable way to purchase necessities for their children and grandchildren. Many members of the Seymour community look forward to this event each year. This year’s “Twice is Nice” is set for April 17 to 18 at the Girls Inc. of Jackson County facility.
