CROTHERSVILLE

The cause of a fire that left a Crothersville man hospitalized in Louisville on Wednesday morning remains under investigation.

Crothersville-Vernon Fire Chief Ben Spencer said on Wednesday afternoon that he was able to talk to Tim Combs, the man who was injured in the fire.

“He’s doing fine,” Spencer said of Combs who was taken to the burn unit at University of Louisville Hospital.

Two other people in a mobile home at 506 E. Oak St. were able to escape without injury, and firefighters used thermal imaging equipment to find a cat and get it out safely.

“He was checked out by Scott County EMS and put in an ambulance and taken to U of L,” Spencer said of Combs, who was alert and talking to rescue workers.

The first firefighters responding to the scene of the fire, reported at 7:34 a.m., found heavy smoke streaming out of the east end of the mobile home, Spencer said.

“We were told everyone was out of it,” he said.

Spencer said the firefighters were able to contain the fire to the bathroom on the east side of the trailer.

“We were able to knock it down and contain it in about 20 minutes,” he said.

The extreme cold temperatures were an issue for firefighters, Spencer said, and some water froze up in hoses after the fire was put out.

“It was tough,” Spencer said of the cold weather.

Spencer said a smoke detector alerted the three residents to the fire.

The two residents were able to take their belongings out of the mobile home before heading to the hospital to join the injured man.

“They’re going to stay with family,” Spencer said.
