Water main break prompts boil order

Jackson County Water Utility Inc. has issued a precautionary boil advisory for its customers north of Freetown, including the communities of Houston, Spraytown and Maumee.

The order also involves customers in Brown County.

The advisory is in effect indefinitely. It was issued after a leak occurred in a line just north of Freetown along State Road 135.

When water service is restored, customers are advised to boil their water, according to a news release.

The utility company suggests boiling the water “vigorously for at least five minutes” and letting it cool prior to using it for food preparation.

Boiling water to use for other purposes is not necessary as long as the water is not consumed, according the news release.

The advisory will be in effect until the company can confirm through testing of the water that bacteria is not present, which should be completed within five days.

After the testing, the company will notify customers when the advisory is canceled.
