Donald C. Frey, 85, of Jonesville, passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, Columbus.

Born Aug. 14, 1929, in Albany, New York, he was the fifth child of Edward H. and Agnes E. (Yarum) Frey. On Dec. 24, 1952, he married Agnes (Donhost) Frey, who preceded him in death in 2006.

Don served in the United States Army from 1949-52, and met his future wife, Agnes, while stationed at Camp Atterbury. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Jonesville and served as Sunday School superintendent for 45 years. Prior to his retirement in 1994, he worked for 40 years as a machinist and setup man for Newsom Industries in Columbus.

An excellent athlete and avid baseball and softball player as a young man, Don was a CYO league baseball all-star in Albany, New York, and played baseball and football for Albany High School. While in the Army, he traveled around the country playing ball for his base team. After the Army, he played baseball with the Columbus Merchants team and softball with a fine Kiel Brothers Oil team in the early 1960s, and several other area teams.

Don was a founding member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Jonesville’s dartball team that was a perennial champion in the 1950s. He continued to play dartball with Jonesville and later with the White Creek North team into the early 2000s.

Survivors include his son, Donald M. (Jerri) Frey; granddaughters, Katea (Marco) Ravega and Mika (Bobby) Mosier; and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Alex and Matthew Schluckbier, Wyatt and Gennah Mosier and Agnes Ravega. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edward, Willard, Robert and Kenneth Frey, and sister, Arlene Frey.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Jonesville with the Rev. Edgar Keinath officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Jonesville with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post 89, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, Disabled American Veterans Post 47 and Vietnam Post 7, all of Seymour.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the fellowship hall at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Sunday School, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, or the donor’s choice.
