Local tubing manufacturer planning to expand

A local steel tubing manufacturer has targeted an 8.8-acre site at Freeman Field Industrial Park as a possible site for an expansion.

Thormax Enterprises LLC is looking to build a 20,000-square-foot building in the 1000 block of Second Avenue in Seymour.

To move to Freeman Field, Thormax must enter into a lease agreement with the Seymour Municipal Airport Authority.

That lease will be discussed at the authority’s board meeting at 7:30 p.m Jan. 18. Thormax President Chad Whittymore and Jim Plump, executive director of Jackson County Industrial Development Corp., discussed the proposed project during the airport board’s meeting Monday.

Authority President Brian Thompson said during the meeting the only concerns he had about the proposal would be if emissions and the height of the building would affect aviation.

Whittymore said the building’s height would not obstruct aviation, and the building would not emit enough smoke to affect pilots.

Thormax currently operates in a 20,672-square-foot building constructed in 1962 on 3.7 acres at 101 W. Laurel St., according to property tax records.

Plump said the expansion is “nothing definite,” but Thormax wanted to see if the airport authority would be receptive to it.

The company’s expansion plans have an estimated price tag of $500,000, and the move could lead to eight new jobs, according to a news release from JCIDC.

Thormax Enterprises, established April 2, 2015, manufactures a range of steel products, including custom signs, carts, racks, gates and fence panels.
