A Kentucky man died Wednesday after police said he suffered a medical issue while driving on Interstate 65.

Robert O. Bell, 53, of Radcliff died while driving a semitrailer shortly before midnight near the 45-mile-marker in Jackson County.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, public information officer for the Indiana State Police Versailles Post, said Bell was driving a 2005 Freightliner in the southbound lanes when the vehicle left the west side of the roadway before coming to a stop.

Bell had been talking on the phone with someone prior to the incident and told the person he was suffering from a medical emergency, police said.

When first responders arrived on the scene 5 miles south of Seymour, Bell was unresponsive. First responders performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before Bell was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, where he was pronounced dead.

Wheeles said the crash did not cause Bell’s death based on evidence from the scene. The vehicle sustained minor damage, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
