The American Cancer Society’s 2016 Relay for Life of Jackson County will officially get underway as event volunteers and participants gather at 6:30 p.m. Monday at MainSource Bank, 1104 E. Tipton St., Seymour.

Teams should send at least one representative, and all team members are encouraged to attend this kickoff event. Other meetings are scheduled Dec. 14, Jan. 11, Feb. 8, March 7, April 11 and May 2 (T-shirt pickup night) at the bank.

The date and location of the six-hour 2016 Relay for Life of Jackson County is tentatively set for May 6 at Seymour High School. The event theme is “Go! Fight! CURE!” and will include a visit from the Indianapolis Colts.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event, dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight cancer.

Teams of family, friends and co-workers take turns walking the track. During the event, participants and visitors have a chance to celebrate the victory of area cancer survivors during the Survivors’ Lap, remember those who have lost their battle to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony and participate in the Fight Back Ceremony that gives everyone a chance to proclaim their way of taking action against the disease.

Volunteers still are needed to help plan the event in the following ways: Community champion, team ambassadors, survivors and caregivers, logistics, fundraising, accounting and ACS CAN.
